Paul Deninger - Category 1.
Racing Age: 38
Hometown: Marshalltown IA
Current Residence: Iowa City IA
Years Racing: 18 years.
Previous Teams:
Hawkeye Bicycle Association, Advantage Cycling, Iowa City Spoke and Ski
Occupation, other than bike racing: Civil service.
Family Status: Married – merely tolerated. Two
children who will stay far away from bike racing if they are smarter than their father.
Best accomplishments on a bike: Iowa State Time Trial
Champion 6 years, Iowa Road Champion a long time ago, Iowa State Criterium Champion
even longer ago, ABR National Time Trial Champion because I had nothing better to do that
weekend, Tandem Time Trial national champion.
How and when did you get into bike racing? It looked way
cooler to me than golf and I had lots of good riders to learn from in M’town. The old
SRC club was also located just 50 miles from my home so I would ride to their shop on
weekends, hang out in the back room and gawk at all the cool trophies and gear.
What would you consider your best strengths as a cyclist?
Time trial, for sure - to see my sprint requires time-lapse photography. For being a
fat-ass I seem to climb pretty respectably too (fat-ass respectable, not Dewey
respectable.)
What is your most shining moment on a bike? I consider any
moment I am upright a good moment.
Most embarrassing moment on a bike? Anytime I embarrass
myself, I just act like it was Greg and no one usually notices.
Favorite movies? Dumb and Dumber and Borat - OK, so they're
basically the same movie.
Favorite food (no pasta, please!)? Greatest pre-race food in
the world – cheesy popcorn. Just showing up to the start line with orange fingertips
makes me feel faster. Mmmmmmmmm.
